Western Canadian Campus Recreation Conference 2011
Thompson Rivers University, Kamloops British Columbia
In 2011 I was fortunate to travel to Kamloops with my Campus Rec supervisors to attend the Western Canadian Campus Recreation Conference (WCCRC). It was my first experience at an event like this. I found is fascinating what other universities were doing and everyone's willingness to share and mobilize their knowledge. Unlike other university areas (like varsity) Campus recreation isn't in direct competition with one another, therefore they are more willing and encourage providing others with insight or lessons they have learned. It was motivating being surrounded by professionals that were so passionate about what they do. By attending seminars I as able to gain knowledge that I was able to then transfer back to Campus Rec at VIU as well as my area of studies.
Western Canadian Campus Recreation Conference 2013
University of Victoria, Victoria British Columbia
When I was presented with the opportunity to attend another WCCRC conference I was thrilled. With the greater understanding of university organizations, campus recreation and with the knowledge I had gained from my courses I knew it would be a great learning experience. Unfortunately none of my supervisors at Campus Rec were able to attend the conference, which gave my the opportunity to present a seminar on behalf of VIU. The topic of my seminar was Creating a Dynamic Work Environment. I was able to discuss what we have done at VIU to create a dynamic and collaborative work environment which is almost like a family. This whole process starts the first weekend of the fall semester, when all the student workers get on a bus, destination unknown, for the annual staff retreat.
Presenting at the conference was a great opportunity for me and helped build my leadership skills. I have been a leader in many situations with my peers but at the conference I was representing VIU and leading other professionals within the industry.
Attending the seminars provided me with tremendous learning as well. I have been able to since apply some of the tips, techniques, or knowledge that others had presented to me. I was also fortunate to be able to mobilize the knowledge to my supervisors as well as some of my classmates. Attending the seminar 'Turning Innovation Into Action' has helped me turn the innovative things or ideas I gathered from other Universities and seminars into Action at VIU.
