VIU Recreation and Tourism Association

The Recreation and Tourism Association (RTA) acts of the voice for the students within the Diploma and Degree program at VIU. The RTA is the most active clubs on campus, often planning, promoting, and putting on multiple events throughout the semester. Events range from educational, professional developmental, social and recreational. The picture to the right is of the group at a Christmas Skating event, where we raised donations for a local charity.

Executive

During the 2010-2011 academic year I held the position of the Recreation Diploma Representative on the executive. This is an elected position which included a week of campaigning and a week of voting. My role as the the Diploma representative was the line of communication between the executive and the students and vice-versa. I also assisted with the planning of multiple events that were hosted throughout the year.

During the 2011-2012 academic year I was elected as the Vice Chair of the association. This position held more responsibility then the previous year. I was the main communication between the RTA and the greater student population and Student Union. I would attend meetings where all clubs were present to discuss what was happening in the university. I also had a greater role in planning and overseeing many of the exciting events that we put on.

My two positions on the RTA gave me great experience working with a diverse committee. I also gained tremendous knowledge on the event planning process. Because we had the ultimate responsibility of all the events, it helped with my problem solving skills and my ability to 'think on my feet'. If we had a 'hiccup' along the way it was up to us to find the best solution.

Posters of some of the events can be found below, if you are interested in finding more information about my role on the executive or any of the events please feel free to contact me at [email protected]
