American Language Program

Picture
While studying at California State University, I was fortunate to have the opportunity to work for the American Language Program (ALP). ALP puts on many different events on and off campus to help integrate international students, help build a community and form connections with one another. My role with ALP was a Fun Trip Coordinator, but I also helped  facilitate Cookie hour, which would happen once a week. It was a social hour for international students to come together and interact with one another in a casual setting, over milk and cookies.

Additional to Cookie Hour, my role with ALP was working as the Fun Trip Coordinator. Fun Trips are events offered at low cost to students. These events get students off campus and exploring some of the amazing things the San Francisco Bay area has to offer. These events varied from city trips, MLB game, NBA games, outlet shopping, wine tours, amusement parks and much more, something for everyone. Some of my duties included planning, publicizing, social networking, managing sign-up, and chaperoning events.

For some events, I was the only chaperone on a bus, in charge of 50 international students. Communicating with this diverse group of individuals forced me to be more strategic and innovative then any other experience. I would often incorporate optional fun activities for the students during bus rides or at events. For example I printed off "take me out to the ball game" song and taught the international students the song while driving to the MLB game. The reaction and excitement when the song came on in the 7th inning stretch was priceless on the faces of all the first timers.

- Feel free to ask me about some of the other exciting things I did while planning events and working with ALP.
